Constipation

In Ayurveda Constipation is known as Mal-baddhata or Kostha baddhata. it’s very common disease now a days due to irregular eating habbits and daily routine. For most of the diseases it is a main cause, for some diseases it is a sign. it’s signifies the lack of regular bowel movements. Undigested food produces toxins (ama) which find their way into the blood-stream that are then carried to all parts of the body. Thus, in chronic cases this problem can give way to serious diseases such as rheumatism, arthritis, piles, high blood pressure and even cancer etc. In all type of pains, which are related to internal causes, constipation is responsible to create that pain.

Causes of Constipation

  • Improper diet and irregular eating habits
  • Emotional disturbances
  • Extreme changes in daily routine
  • Lack of sleep and late goes to bed
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Sleeping day time
  • Insufficient intake of water and high fiber food
  • Ignoring the urge of bowel movements
  • Excessive intake of animal protein
  • Certain medications like antidepressants, narcotics (particularly codeine), iron and calcium supplements, calcium-channel blockers (antihypertensives, particularly verapamil) and non-magnesium antacids
  • Pregnancy may cause constipation due to hormonal imbalance, the low level of activity and the increasing pressure of the growing uterus against the intestines

Symptoms of Constipation

  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Dark circles under the eye
  • Straining for a bowel movement
  • Having hard/lumpy or pencil-thin stools
  • Coated tongue
  • Depression and Insomnia
  • Pimples and Mouth ulcers
  • Pain in the lumbar region
  • Acidity and Heartburn
  • Sudden weight gain/loss
  • Feeling as if there is something blocking your rectum and preventing a bowel movement
  • Feeling as if you have not completely emptied your bowels
  • Needing to have press down on your abdomen or some other form of help to empty your rectum

Treatment

Constipation which can be treated by Ayurveda, supported by dietary changes and life style modifications.There are a lot of Ayurvedic medicines eq. Trifla , Terminella Chebula (Haritaki), Plantago Ovata (Isabgol), Nishoth (Ipomoea Trupethum), Senna (Cassia Angustifolia) and Kumari, which has very affective results. Beside internal medication there are aasans, yoga and Panchkarma therapies. There are few Routine advice, which should follow under Ayurvedic Physician.

  • A self-massage with mustard oil is one of the top Ayurvedic constipation remedies. Massage the abdominal area with warm mustard oil with circular motions in a clockwise manner. Do this at bedtime. It is important to remember that you must eat dinner at least 3 hours prior to the massage.
  • Do physical activities/ outdoor games regularly
  • Adhere to a daily routine to help your body reset the internal clock and develop a “habit.” Attend to the call of nature regularly even if you do not get your motions.
  • Do not build a dependence on laxatives.
  • When going to the toilet, elevate your feet by placing a low stool just under so your legs are slightly higher than hip level. Indian toilets were are best to help in naturally for bowl syndrome.
  • Manage your stress levels with meditation and Yoga
  • Make sure to stay hydrated with plenty of water
  • Take a warm Tub sit-bath
  • Add ghee 5 ml taken with warm milk and some sugar at bedtime
  • Boil 20 gm raisin in 20 ml milk and drink in the morning on an empty stomach.
  • 1-2 teaspoon of gulkand with milk is a safe constipation remedy for pregnant ladies
  • Diet advice: Avoid white flour, rice, bread, pulses, cakes, pastries, biscuits, white sugar and dairy products
  • Restrict the intake of diuretic drinks such as tea, coffee and alcohol
  • Take the following foods regularly Wholegrain Cereals, Wheat, Green Vegetables eq. Spinach, broccoli etc, Fruits Pear, guava, grapes, orange, papaya, prunes & figs etc
  • Add fiber to your diet, fiber sources are legumes, fruits and vegetables, wheat bran, whole grains and cereals etc
  • Prebiotic and probiotics are a must in a bowel-friendly diet like yogurt, asparagus and pineapple etc
