Pichu is an ayurvedic palliative treatment that is targeted to treat your body problems. It is a unique therapy which comes in the category of Bahya Snehana (external application of medicated oils). Pichu in Ayurveda stands for sponging or padding therapy.

 

 

Pichu Therapy

The cotton pad is allowed to stay in place from a few minutes to few hours. A bandage is tied over the pad enclosing it along with the painful part to avoid the pad from falling off from its position. With modulation it can be used over all the painful parts. The process of Pichu therapy includes dipping a sterile cotton pad in an Ayurvedic herbal oils and placing it over the affected joint or muscle. The soaked cotton pad is kept on the affected joint or muscle for a few minutes or hours. Duration for keeping pichu on affected area is differs from severity of the disease.

Who should go for Pichu treatment ?

Patients who are experiencing Vata type problems: eq. body swelling, pain, and degeneration of soft tissues and joints. Pitta along with Vata joint conditions. It is helpful in resolving the ama in the joints or to remove swelling caused due to some fluids around the joints.

There are three stages for Pichu therapy:

  1. Purva karma- First thing is to examine the disease and patient and then is for selection of herbal oil, grit and Pichu which we need for the procedure.
  2. Pradhana Karma: Take a herbal oil or ghee in a small bowl and warm it (make sure the temperature of herbal oil or ghee must not burn the skin). Take a sterile cotton pad and place over the joint. Then cotton pad is dipped in the oil and squeezed to remove excessive dripping of oil. The pad dipped in oil is kept over the painful joint/ muscle. To keep the temperature of the pad constantly warm, warm oil is continuously poured over the pad. Alternatively the pad which loses the temperature shall be replaced with another pad dipped in warm oil. A bandage cloth is taken and tied around the joint with pad in position.
  3. Paschat Karma- After finishing the procedure, Pichu is removed and area cleaned with warm water. After completion, Swedana is administered to enhance the effect. Swedana enhances blood circulation around the painful joints. Virechana (Daily purgation) and vasti – Herbal enemas in the form of Anuvasana / Sneha Vasti and Kashaya Vasti / Asthapana Vasti shall be given according to the patient’s condition.
