Frozen Shoulder

According to Ayurveda frozen shoulder is caused due to an injury to the shoulder joint or vaata aggravation in the body. Vata dominating condition, where the vaata dosha only get vitiated, resulting mainly acute pain, tenderness etc. Vata kapha dominating condition, where vaata along with kapha dosha also gets vitiated, resulting mainly stiffness, heaviness, pain, restricted movement etc. The stiffness to the joints is contributed by Kapha Dosha. Because of involvement of Kapha Dosha, in many patients, cold exposure and at night time, the stiffness more worsens.In Ayurveda, the condition of frozen shoulder is co-related to Apabahuka.

A condition that leads to pain and stiffness of the shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes severe shoulder pain and stiffness making it difficult to move the shoulder. Initially it starts with a shoulder pain that lasts for months and increases in severity with time. Frozen shoulder is the result of scarring, thickening, and shrinkage of the joint capsule. Any injury to the shoulder can lead to a frozen shoulder.

Causes:

  • Long hours sitting work
  • Chilled food, irregular eating habits
  • Go to bed late night and wakeup late
  • Stress, excess sex activities
  • More oily and fried food, excess use of non-vegetarian food
  • Excess of pungent, bitter and astringent tasting foods etc.
  • Injury to the region surrounding shoulder joint
  • Excess exposure to the wind, Air-conditions etc
  • Sleeping with wrong posture

Symptoms:

  • Pain in Shoulder Joint and surrounding area including arm
  • Stiffness & Tenderness around the shoulder joint
  • Pain during movement of the joint.
  • Swelling over the joint and around area
  • Difficulty in carrying things
  • Bruising around the shoulder joint or arm
  • Signs of infection such as fever, redness etc
  • Feeling of Weakness in the shoulder and arm
