While sex is something which is supposed to be a lot of fun and pleasurable to engage with your partner, sometimes called vaginism and genito-pelvic pain disorder, is a condition that affects a woman’s ability to engage in vaginal penetration, including sexual intercourse, manual penetration, insertion of tampons or menstrual cups, This is the result of an involuntary vaginal muscle spasm, which makes any kind of vaginal penetration painful or impossible. While there is a lack of evidence to definitively identify which muscle is responsible for the spasm, the pubococcygeus muscle, sometimes referred to as the “PC muscle”, is most often suggested. Other muscles such as the levator ani, bulbocavernosus, circumvaginal, and perivaginal muscles have also been suggested.

Understanding the problem

Vaginismus is a problem which occurs when the muscles of the pelvic floor of a woman’s body contract and in spasm, when there is an attempt to insert something into the vagina. This contraction is not voluntary in nature. In a significant number of cases, vaginismus is the natural reaction of the body when something untoward has happened with the woman before. In many cases, if the woman has been the subject of any form of sexual abuse, she is likely to suffer from vaginismus more than other woman who have not been through this unfortunate experience. it can also turn out to be quite the opposite. One of the reasons for this can be a problem called vaginismus. And, a condition like this can fear to break a marriage or lost a partner, it will be very helpful to treat it on time with dignity and respect.

How we know about vaginismus:

  • Spasms during intercourse
  • Avoidance of sex
  • Difficult or impossible penetration
  • Burning or stinging with tightness
  • Uncomfortable penile insertion
  • Difficulty undergoing pelvic exams
  • Ongoing pain following childbirth, infections, cancer, surgeries or other issues

Treatment for vaginismus:

  • Kegel Exercises And Dilation: Dilators and kegel exercise the best ways in bringing some control over the muscle contraction. The kegel exercise is to squeeze the vagina for 3 seconds just as it is done when we try to stop ourselves from urinating and then release it for the next 3 seconds. This should be repeated 15 times in one session and should be done 3 times in a day. It will start giving visible outcomes in a couple of months. It will improve the situation and give you some forms of penetration without pains. As long as a woman is consistent, she can enjoy the joys of sex minus the pain.
  • Sex Therapy (counselling): Sex therapy is one of the best ways in which a woman can overcome the fears.
