What is Vata body type and what does it means to us: Since we born, every person being has an individual combination of the three type of body constitution (body dosha or Ayurveda body type)

  1. Vata
  2. Pitta
  3. Kapha

The Vata Dosha (most important) contains the properties of the elements ether and air. Since Pitta and Kapha cannot move without it, Vata is considered the leader of the three Ayurvedic Principles in the body. It’s very important to keep Vata in good balance.

When Vata is in balanced condition:  Vata governs all movement in the body and mind. Vata is mainly responsible for our energy and all body movement as well as for nerve impulses. It controls breathing, speech, circulation, digestion, elimination of wastes, mild to variable hot flushes (Invariable), panic, nervousness, mood swings, palpitations, bloating and the movement of thoughts across the mind. Vata people often with dry skin and hairs, paired with cold hands and feet, they tends to sleep lightly and wake easily. Vata people are live in equilibrium, creative, remain vibrant and friendly. They are closely connected to the spiritual. Vata people love music and dance. Moreover, they are active and like to move.

When Vata is in imbalanced condition: Physically, pain is the most obvious symptom of excess vata, other common signs are variable appetite, insomnia, dry skin, constipation, weakness, anxiety, hypertension, restlessness, flatulence, and irregular menstruation. Vata people are quick-witted, meaningless money expenditures and open to new experiences. We like their easiness but not their forgetfulness. Vata body type can easily gain weight and other side they easily can loss weight as well, which is the good point for vata constitution people.

Advice for Balancing Vata:

  1. Eating in a peaceful environment is very important for vata type body people.
  2. Drink Ayurveda herbal tea with ginger, cardamom and cinnamon etc.
  3. Drink lukewarm water and fresh juices.
  4. Eat cooked and warm food (less raw foods).
  5. Add 1 spoon of cow-ghee everyday in your diet.
  6. Favour warm, oily, heavy foods and sweet, sour, and salty tastes.
  7. Do follow regular daily routine and exercises
  8. Got to bed early and tale lots of rest.
  9. Do regular daily elimination.
  10. Do at least once a week Abhyanga (ayurvedic massage with sesame oil) before shower.
  11. Stay warm in cold and windy weather.
  12. Eat something at least within 3-4hrs

Vata-Pacifying Diet:

  • Vegetables: You can eat these vegetables if they are cooked, especially with ghee or oil and  spices: peas, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, cauliflower, celery, zucchini, potatoes, beetroots, cucumbers, carrots, asparagus and sweet potatoes are good.
  • Fruits: Favour sweet, sour, or heavy fruits, such as banana, grape, orange, avocado, cherrie, melon, berrie, papaya, plum, pineapple and mango.
  • Dairy: All dairy products pacify Vata. Always boil milk before you drink it and only drink warm milk.
  • Sweeteners: All sweeteners are good for pacifying Vata.
  • Beans: Reduce all beans, except moong dhal and eat light and easily digestible.
  • Oils. All oils decrease Vata in the body.
  • Grains: Rice and wheat are very good. Reduce intake of barley, corn, millet, buckwheat and oats.
  • Spices: Cardamom, cumin, ginger, cinnamon, salt, cloves, mustard seed and small quantities of black pepper are acceptable.
  • All dry fruits and nuts are good, but eat dry fruits only overnight soaked.

Ayurveda herbs for Vata pacifying:

  1. Vidarikand (Pueraria tuberosa)
  2. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
  3. Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)
  4. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)

What to Avoid:

  1. Avoid pungent, bitter and astringent tastes.

  3. Don’t skip the meals when you are busy or stressed.

  6. Reduce dry, light and cold food.

  • Eat foods according to the dominant dosha or that will pacify (balance) a dosha that has become excessive or aggravated. Because Kapha is heavy, oily and cold. Only eat foods that is light to digest, dry and warm,
  • Only eat whole grains, barley, corn, millet, buckwheat, and rye and brown rice in the full day diet,
  • Reduce intake of white rice, and wheat,
  • The diet should increase whole, fresh food and nuts, which is a healthy in nutrients and improved insulin sensitivity and lipid levels in people
  • Don’t eat processed and canned foods.
  • Drinking hot ginger tea will helps in digestion. Drink 2 cups of ginger tea everyday,
  • Reduce intake of dairy, actually it increases Kapha. You can use small amount of pure cow-ghee (clarified butter), low-fat milk, and low-fat yogurt etc,
  • All beans are good except for soybeans and tofu,
  • Eat more garlic, onion, raw banana, spinach, bitter gourd and black plum,
  • Avoid all sweet fruits like grapes, pineapple, mangoes, bananas, and figs etc,
  • Eat more lighter fruits such as pears, pomegranates, apples, cranberries, and apricots,
  • Avoid sweet, sour, and salty foods,
  • Decrease the intake of potatoes, sweet potatoes, jams, fresh grains and pulses (legumes), whole yogurt (high in fat),
  • Don’t eat sweets, Junk, oily and spicy foods,
  • Start doing some light exercises regularly, such as brisk walking, deep breathing exercise,
  • All spices except salt are pacifying to Kapha. Use pungent spices like pepper, cayenne, mustard seed, and ginger freely in your diet,
  • Avoid day sleeping as it increases Kledaka-Kapha,
  • Reduce stress with meditation and deep breathing exercises,
  • Go to bed in between 8pm-10pm,
  • Dinner should be done before 2-3hrs of sleeping.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 medium sized organic carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 2-3 Tbsp fresh peeled ginger root and chopped it
  • 1 Tbsp vegan butter
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1pinch black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 pinch cinnamon
  • 2 spoon Olive oil
  • cilantro or parsley garnish

INSTRUCTIONS for Preparation

  • First Step– Take a large pot of water and add carrots to boil it until smoothen. Drain carrots from water and add to a blender.
  • Second Step– Add vegan butter, other spices and veggie broth to the blender, or you can add these later while soup is simmering.
  • Third Step– Blend soup from low to high for 2-3 minutes, until very smooth.
  • Fourth Step– Place a large pot over low heat and put olive oil in it, then add ginger, cinnamon and bay leaf- stir it, after 2m pour soup in it. Place over low heat. Simmer on low, covered, for at least five minutes. This will remove all the air bubbles that for during blending.
  • Fifth Step- Eat or serve warm

Ardhavabhedaka (Migraine):

Ardha = half side of the head                                                                                                                        Avabhedaka = breaking pain/ splitting/ penetrating  / bursting

Headache in which there is bursting pain on one half of the head is called ardhavabhedaka. Migraine also known as ‘Hemi-crania’. Ardhavabhedaka (Migraine) is one among the 11 types of Shirorogas (head diseases) described in Ayurvedic classical text books. It is a type of headache where pain is specially localised to one half of the head. It can be correlated with migraine based on the similarity in aetiology, pathology, symptoms and treatment principles and it’s the most common problem people seek medical attention.

What are the Causes of Ardhavabhedak (Migraine): Ardhavabhedaka headache is caused by simultaneous vitiation of all three doshas in the body.

  • Highly consumption of dry foods and excessive food
  • Adhyasana- Eating second meal without digestion of previous food.
  • Exposure to breeze and fog /mist, hot and cold climates.
  • Excessive watch tv, phone and laptops.
  • Vega-dharna- Suppression of natural body urges and reflexes
  • Excessive indulgence in sex activities, or watch porn videos
  • Dhuma sevana- Smokeing and drinking excess alcohol.
  • Excessive indulgence in physical activities / exercise
  • Excessive exhaustion
  • Presence of worms in the body
  • Excessive swimming and water games.
  • Excessive Sleeping, late night sleeping and not sleeping during night.
  • Stress inducing factors can include:
    1) Physical stress such as excessive fasting, exercises, exhaustion, improper body postures, injury/trauma etc

    3) Environmental stress like high altitudes and prolonged exposure to the sun or heat.

Pathogenesis: When Vata gets vitiated either individually or with vitiated kapha gets lodged in half portion of the head. The vata aggravated in any one side of the head on getting blocked by vitiated kapha causes headache. The episodes of headache occur once in 3, 5, 15 or 30 days. Migraines can last for hours to days, and the pain can be so severe that it interferes with your daily activities. For some people, a warning symptom known as a migraine occurs before or with the headache in four different phases. Ardhavabhedaka headache has two types according to dosha –

  1. Vata ardhavabhedaka- Mainly caused by vitiated vata in the body
  2. Vata and Kapha ardhavabhedaka- Mainly caused by vitiation of both vata and kapha dosha in the body.

Symptoms of Ardhavabhedaka:

  • Unbearable pain in half side of the head.
  • Nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and phono-phobia.
  • These symptoms occur suddenly without any cause, as episodes once in 5-10-15 days.
  • Dizziness, giddiness and sometimes loss of consciousness.
  • Constipation, mood changes, food craving, stiff neck and thirst.
  • Splitting and blasting type of severe pain.
  • Pain as if injured by a sharp weapon or thunderbolt in the sides of the neck, eyebrow, temple, ear, eye and forehead of the afflicted half of the head.
  • In severe cases blindness and deafness happened.

Treatment for Ardhavabhedaka headache:
