Why is it important to detox the body?

Why is it important to detox the body?

Why is it important to detox the body?

Ayurveda is all about balancing the body and mind under special principles and guidelines. According to Ayurveda every individual is composed of five essential elements and can be categorised into three constitutions specially Vaata-Pitta-Kapha (all together called- Tridosha). When there is any imbalance in any of these three Dosha, the diseases generates in the body.  So, that’s why Ayurvedic is a treatment from is centred of detox and rejuvenate therapies, herbs, yoga, meditation, diet and lifestyle modifications. By supporting the elimination of un-absorbed food, heavy metals and other toxins, you will help to improve your digestive system.

Detox is to eliminate toxins from your body, improve health, and promote weight loss. Your body has a very unique way of eliminating toxins that involves the liver, kidneys, digestive system, skin, and lungs.  After your detoxification, your body will have better digestive and lymphatic function. Both of these are key to a strong and balanced immune system and healthy life.

What are Toxins? Toxins are the un-metabolised waste that is not utilised by the body. It can be formed from food that are absorbed but not used by the body, or that are undigested and create fermentation. Any kind of substance which is harmful to your body may be considered a toxin, that enters your body-mind and interferes with your natural state, creating imbalances that, over time, can lead to illness. Everything that our body could not digest may converts into toxins.

How are Toxins formed? Toxins are harmful chemical particles that need to be eliminated from the body. They are formed in a number of ways: by wrong diet and unhealthy lifestyle choices, by consuming toxic substances such as alcohol and drugs, smoking cigarettes, caffeine and other chemical products. Ayurveda believes the main cause begins with what is called Pragya aparadh, the mistake of the intellect, which leads to misuse of the mind, senses and time.

  • The mistake of the intellect begin when one sees that which is harmful as useful to the body, or not eating according to one’s need of hunger or digestive power.
  • The mistake of the senses can lead to being overshadowed by sensory desire, often seen in overeating
  • The mistake in time relate to not eating according to the seasons or not varying one’s diet according to the seasons which makes a huge difference.
  • These mistakes lead to poor diet, wrong eating habits, overeating, unnecessary cravings and wrong routine.
  • Physical toxins found in our food, personal & household products, air, water, and other elements of your environment
  • Emotional toxins, such as self-criticism, negative thought patterns and beliefs, chronic stress, and painful experiences that you haven’t fully digested.

These days, toxins are everywhere: in food as preservative, in water as water “purifying” agents such as chlorine and fluoride, in  air as a small chemical particles and in most of the personal care products they are commonly available. Toxins are also formed after the normal metabolism process. This in turn leads to aggravation of Vata-Pita-Kapha imbalance and weakening digestive fire (agni), which creates ama. Our body has the inbuilt ability to remove these toxins naturally if the body channels are healthy and fine. That means if there is any obstruction or disturbance in lymphatic drainage, urination, blood circulation, elimination, sweating, etc, these toxins cannot be removed from the tissues properly. If these toxins are staying in the tissues for a longer period of time, they may cause swelling in the tissues, resulting in painful joints as well as causing an uneasy, heavy and drained feeling which may lead to anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc.

How you know toxins accumulate in your body?

  1. If you experience frequent indigestion like constipation, gas and bloating etc
  2. If you don’t feel hungry even you haven’t eaten for hours
  3. If you have brain fog and tight-headache
  4. If you have low energy levels
  5. If you feel sleepy and lazy all the time
  6. If you have unusual smelling body odour
  7. If you have body-aches and more often feels stress
  8. Your tongue is coated with white/creamish/yellow colour layer
  9. If you feel joint-aches, fatigue, allergies, gas and headaches etc
  10. You feeling still tired in the morning after wakeup 6-8hrs sleep
  11. If you feeling heaviness and tiredness during whole day and sleepy during day time
  12. If you have more serious problems such as autoimmune diseases, acne, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, reflux, arthritis and migraines etc

How to Eliminate Ama/ Toxin from the body: The nature of the detoxification procedure is to support the natural ability of the body to purify itself. In Ayurveda there is a “Panchkarma” which is very useful and strong weapon to remove toxins safely and healthy way. The main steps to remove toxins from the body;

1.The first stage in eliminating toxin/ama itself by Nidan Parivarjanan (reduce the causes production of toxin). Whatever the causes of toxins, simply remove them from your routine and lifestyle after consulting an Ayurvedic consultant.

2. The next step is to digest the ama, a process known as Ama Pachan, through the use of digestive substances. This can be as simple as dieting for specific time, drink warm water, or using specific spices and herbal preparations

3. Next step is Lekhan (to scrape the dosha) Using warm water with lemon and honey in the morning, and may also include the use of specific spices such as ginger, cinemmon, and black pepper or specific herbal preparations. But this depends on the prakriti of the individual, as certain spices may be produce too heat or are too clod according to your parkirti.

4. The next step is to increase the Agni called digestive fire. You should take light diet and exercises. This may consist of a strict regimen beginning with liquid meals, progressing gradually to semi-liquid meals, then to thicker soups and gradually to more solid food over a period of time.

5. Final step is Shodhan(cleansing) of the body, which is the elimination of ama/toxins. This can be done with specific ayurvedic herbal formulas and therapies called Panchakarma

It is a general term for age-related wear and tear affecting the spinal disks in your neck. As the disks dehydrate and shrink, bone spurs and other signs of osteoarthritis develop. It’s very common and worsens with age. Cervical Spondylosis is a kind of Arthritis that affects cervical vertebrae and is characterised by pain at the back of the neck (radiating towards the upper limbs) and vertigo while bending downwards. There might be sensory loss and numbness in the upper limbs. There are some degenerative changes in the cervical vertebrae. This, when coupled with trauma or incorrect posture while sitting or sleeping leads to the manifestation of Cervical Spondylosis. It is a health complaint which is increasing day by day in the young adults.

According to Ayurveda the Vata, the principle of movement is the predominant function with the skeleto-muscular system and the nervous system. Problems relating to these systems are predominantly caused by vitiated Vata. Vatavyadhis comes under a group of diseases which manifest by dhatu-kshaya or margavarana and those are classified according to hetu, sthana and lakshana. In the classification of dhatukshayajanya vatavyadhis, many degenerative conditions are considered. Cervical spondylosis can be considered one among them and can be compared with ‘Vishwachi’. The neck bone structure consists of bones stacked one over the other with sandwich of disc cartilage in between. The triangular – circular aperture within these neck bones (cervical bones) paves way for the nerves from the brain to pass through. The branches of these nerves (nerve roots) arising from through the back and sides of these bones form plexus (merge and divide) and form different nerves. This complex arrangement of nerves is called cervical plexus. These nerves spread on the sides to supply to neck, face, back of the head, ears, shoulder and the full length of the arms.

Hernia of the Disc– Slipped Disc

It is more commonly found in males of middle age group. People who are under exertion, frequent travellers and weight lifting can end up with trauma on neck bones, leading to spondylosis. Increase in Vata leads to depletion of body tissues. (For example, with ageing Vata increases and body tissues start degenerating.) The dryness and degeneration caused by Vata leads to decrease of Kapha Dosha. Sleshaka Kapha is responsible for cushioning in between bone joints. Hence disc degeneration sets in leading to spondylosis.

Causes of Cervical Spondylosis:

  • As you get aged, the bones and cartilage that make up your backbone and neck gradually develop wear and tear. These changes may include:
  1. Herniated disks – Age also affects the exterior of your spinal disks. Cracks often appear, leading to bulging or herniated disks — which sometimes can press on the spinal cord and nerve roots.
  2. Dehydrated disks – Disks act like cushions between the vertebrae of your spine. By the age of 40, most people’s spinal disks begin drying out and shrinking, which allows more bone-on-bone contact between the vertebrae.
  3. Bone spurs – Disk degeneration often results in the spine producing extra amounts of bone, sometimes called bone spurs, in a misguided effort to shore up the spine’s strength. These bone spurs can sometimes pinch the spinal cord and nerve roots.
  4. Stiff ligaments – Ligaments are cords of tissue that connect bone to bone. Increasing age can make spinal ligaments stiffen and calcify, making your neck less flexible.

  • Other Causes: Intake of dry, cold/ frozen, light and untimely intake of food
  • Fasting for long period leads to depleted nourishment and increase of Vata Dosha.
  • Junk food, prepared preserved food and cold-drinks
  • Less intake of water/liquids
  • Suppression of the urges
  • Smoking, Stress and Insomnia,
  • Traveeling for long distances and Late night work schedules
  • Having more of sour, bitter, and astringent foods
  • Heavy exercises or completely lack of exercises
  • Weight bearing in the head, shoulder or neck and bad posture sitting habits
  • Stress, Fear, Grief, Anger,Loss of interest in work etc
  • Lifestyle involving overindulgence in physical, mental, and sexual activities.

Clinical features of Cervical spondylosis:

  • Pain in the neck & shoulders
  • Difficulty in the usual functions of the neck like rotation, flexion, extension etc
  • Radiating pain to the shoulder, forearm or arm
  • Muscular spasm, Numbness, Tingling & Numbness in arms
  • Headache and Stiffness in the neck
  • Joint stiffness and Fatigue
  • Tingling sensation, numbness, weakness in the arms
  • Difficulty in walking, lack of co-ordination
  • Any cervical spine injuries.

Treatment for Cervical spondylosis:

Cervical Spondylosis treatment in Ayurveda works on the root-cause by balancing the doshas and strengthening the bones. Ayurveda can treat spondylitis in safe and simpler way. Treatment in Ayurveda is aimed at restoring the equilibrium through correction of the underlying functional in-equilibrium. The treatment for Cervical Spondylosis is comprehensive and may include Ayurveda internal medicines & external applications for mild cases and along with these, Panchakarma therapies in severe cases. Diet and lifestyle modifications are applied in both the scenarios. Average duration of therapy may range between 4 – 6 weeks and most of the cases experience high recovery. The heated oil helps to improve the space between the two neck bones, leading to relief from disc herniation. The oil, along with oral medicines help to improve nourishment of disc cartilage and bone, reversing the degeneration process. It’s very beneficial to relieve pain, inflammation of muscles and ligaments and to improve flexibility of neck bone joints.

  • Snehana (Oleation): Both internal and external oleation are very beneficial
  • Swedana (Sudation): Mild to moderate sudation to the affected area
  • Mridu shodhana (Mild purgation) for normalise the vitiated vaata dosha
  • Greeva basti (Retaining the medicaments in the nape of the neck) In this procedure, a compound is created around the back of the neck with black gram paste. Medicated oil (Ksheerabala oil, Bala Ashwagandhadi oil etc) is heated and is retained within the compound for a few minutes time.
  • Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Pinda Sweda and Shastika Sali Pinda Swedam
  • Pizhichil (pouring of warm medicated oil)
  • There are plenty of heabs that helps in cervical spondylosis
  • Nasyam, Shirovasti , Sarvangadhara, Navara or mamsa kizhi and Basti etc.

Yoga And Exercises: In the beginning stages, Yoga exercises to strengthen neck muscles and ligaments with Asanas. If you apply pain relieving oil such as Mahanarayana taila, 10 minutes before practising Asanas. Soorya Namaskara, Ardha Naukasana, Makarasana, and Marjariasana can help. But, you will have to seek expert advice for following these yogasanas.

Instruments that help:

  • Cervical collars: recommendations are only to wear only 2-4 hours, otherwise you can alter hours eq. wear one hour then 2hours rest etc. Must not use for longer time. It helping by restricting the movement of neck. It reduce the pain and heal the ligaments faster, as lesser neck movements.
  • Cervical pillow: It keeps the neck in a comfortable position during sleeping time.

Advice on Diet and habits:

  • Warm water, Red rice, Milk, Butter, Ghee and Wheat
  • Rest the neck as much as you can, rather than to do continous work

Benefits of drinking water from a Copper-vessels

Benefits of drinking water from a Copper-vessels

Benefits of drinking water in Copper-cup:

So, the question is why we should drink water in an expensive cups!

To specify this point, have you ever wondered that why you still feels heaviness, and lack of energised after drinking multiple glasses of water in a day ?

In order to make a safe drinking water, water safety organisations use basic and more advanced filtration systems to remove most contaminants from drinking water. These systems make water safe for drinking but they also completely shift its natural pH and destroy water’s vital life energy. By the time your drinking water has been used, it has a great traveled distances through water pipes and gets into your glass, it has lost much of its vitality and natural tasting. As a result, the water we drink is not easily absorbed by our body. The Tamra (copper) recharges the vitality of your drinking water. It ionises, energises, and balances the pH, which making the water “alive” again. This energised water is better absorbed by your body cells and therefore enhances hydration and healthy.

In Ayurveda, drinking water stored overnight in a copper jar, that has been cleansed and ionised has a great benefits to the health. This transformed, therapeutic water taken from a copper cup is called Tamra jal. Copperised water is a natural antioxidant that helps balance the three doshas of the body ( Vata, pitta and kapha). The trace amount of copper in a Tamra jal is safe and heathy. When water is stored in a copper vessel for over eight hours, very small quantities of copper get dissolved in this water. This process is called “oligo-dynamic effect” and has the ability to destroy a wide range of harmful microbes, molds, fungi etc. due to the toxic effect it has on living cells.

The material of a copper vessel plays a important role in its health benefits. When you store water in a copper bottle overnight, then copper ions dissolve in that water in small amount. This process is called the Oligo-dynamic, Effect as this water now has the potency to kill harmful microbes, fungi and bacteria in the body.

Bit odd taste: It’s extremely good for health, Even though sometimes it may taste a bit odd, but it is worth noting that this water never becomes stale and can be stored for a long time.

How Emotions Lead to Body Pains

How Emotions Lead to Body Pains

It’s Scientifically proved that there is a strong connection between mental and physical health. In Ayurveda text granthas have this information since decades. The author of Natural medicines “Charaks” explained widely about the powerful connection between our emotions and body, how our emotions, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly affect health outcomes. The beliefs you hold about yourself and the world, your emotions, your memories, and your habits all can influence mental and physical health. These connections between what is going on in your mind and heart, and what is happening in your body, form the psycho-emotional roots of health and disease.

Emotions like anger, fear, guilt, anxiety, sadness, resentment, jealousy, depression, and stress can manifest within the body and contribute to imbalance and disease. For example, you are likely already familiar with the way that fear can contribute to digestive upset or how tension can lead to headaches. When you experience emotional states like sadness, joy, or anger, physiological sensations occur in different areas of your body.

Research has proved that the body mechanisms through which stressful emotions alter white blood cell functions. Stress decreases the white blood cell response to viral infected cells and to cancer cells. Moreover, vaccinations are less effective in those who are stressed and wounds heal less quickly in those who are stressed. While stress reduce the activity of some white blood cells, stress does not compromise the function of all types of white blood cells. Indeed, some types of autoimmune disease, which involve particular subsets of white blood cells, are exacerbated by stress. The literature documents the efficacy of talk-therapy interventions in altering immune system parameters and enhancing the body’s ability to combat disease.

Whatever you think, it comes true to your body and develop disease: The way you think and feel, and the deep-seated belief patterns you hold can all contribute to the development of disease. If you do not explore and deal with painful emotions, they can create an underlying sense of anxiety, depression, or anger that can physically disrupt the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Emotional suffering, physical pain, and other sensations share similarities in their neural pathways. For example, feelings of anger or insecurity can disrupt the regular beating of the heart and the calm flow of the breath. This further activates the sympathetic nervous system in the same way that occurs when you are facing a threat, creating an even greater sense of unease and pain.

The brain is the hardware that allows you to experience mental states that are labeled the “mind.” This concept of the “mind” encompasses mental states including thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and emotions. Different mental states can positively or negatively affect biological functioning. This occurs since the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems share a common chemical reactions in the body, which allows constant communication between the mind and body through messengers like hormones and neurotransmitters. Neurological pathways connect parts of the brain that process emotions with the spinal cord, muscles, cardiovascular system, and digestive tract. This allows major life events, stressors, or emotions to trigger physical symptoms. You may have experienced this aspect of the mind-body connection when you feel butterflies in your stomach when you feel nervous, or when you heart feels like it is pounding out of your chest when you are under intense stress.

These intersecting systems help to establish the mind-body connection that influences the maintenance of health or the development of disease. For example, emotions like anxiety can trigger increased stress hormones, which may suppress the immune system and set the stage for the development of infections or cancer.
